Recordable DVD Packaging
Posted by: Sam in DVD Packaging, tags: dvd boxes, dvd cases, DVD Packaging, dvd sleevesAlthough DVDs are the same size as CDs they use a different type of packaging. Typically DVD-Video is packaged in DVD cases which allow for larger booklets and a distinctive difference from a CD-ROM ‘Jewel case‘. Also unique to this type of packaging is the locking mechanism that holds the disc in it’s center hub.
The hub has 2 or more fingers that hold the disc in place. Many people believe the more the better. DVD Recordable discs are glued together (two polycarbonate substrates sandwich the recording dye and reflective layer) and the feeling is the fewer the fingers the more stress is put on the center hub of the recordable DVD.
This is unlike CD-R which is bonded to a single side of polycarbonate or Blu-ray recordable which is also only bonded to one side of the disc. Recordable DVD is a little more fragile on the edges.
More important is the force required to remove the disc then how many fingers it has. A mechanism that allows for the disc to pop-out and not twist in anyway is far superior. There is a DVD case that holds the discs from the outside (and you can stack them up in the case) of the disc but it’s more of a oddity then the majority of DVD cases using the center spider lock or M-Lock.
DVD Cases come in a wide range of colors and disc capacity. The more discs you store the wider the case gets and then requires a special insert for the jacket.
Another method of storing DVDs is the sleeve or envelope. At it’s simplest the DVD sleeve holds a disc and may have a window or not. Envelopes resemble sleeves with the addition of a flap. Although any sleeve be it paper or plastic can be used, Tyvek DVD sleeves are the recommended storage method for archive. Tyvek provides protection against static and is chemically neutral.
DVD sleeves that are bound together using a tie or metal/plastic rings and enclosure provide compact storage for DVD discs. These DVD cases can hold up to 24 discs and have a white style sleeve and a black style sleeve. For weddings the photo and disc case is perfect for that special time and let’s you have a place to store your 4×5 images in plastic sleeves and a clip to hold the DVD in the case.
